Hepatoscope Description
A hepatoscope is an FDA-approved mobile ultrasound system with transient elastography and premium ultrasound tissue quantification that replaces the liver biopsy as the gold standard for diagnosis. A hepatoscope is indicated for imaging anatomical structures in the abdomen and measurements of physical properties in the spleen and liver. In particular, the Hepatoscope utilizes what is known as shear wave technology to provide estimates of tissue stiffness in the liver. Results gathered from the Hepatoscope in conjunction with routine blood work and abdominal imaging can aid the diagnosis, monitoring, and clinical management of adult patients with liver disease.
What to expect?
A hepatoscope is a safe and non-invasive procedure a trained and certified technician performs. The procedure is completed using a proprietary ultrasound probe that emits vibrations over the skin of the patient’s abdomen. There should be no pain associated with this procedure. Still, patients are always encouraged to notify the performing technician of any pain or discomfort they are experiencing so that they can adjust accordingly.
Procedure Instructions
This procedure is focused on the upper right quadrant of a patient’s abdomen. Therefore, it is highly recommended that patients wear loose clothing that provides easy access to this region while maintaining patient discretion and privacy. Dresses are not recommended.
Patients must fast for a minimum of 3 hours before their scheduled Hepatoscope appointment time. Routine medications should still be taken before the procedure. Food, coffee, or tea may profoundly affect patients' results, so it is highly recommended that they drink nothing but water during the mandatory fasting period.
Patients should not wear lotions or perfume, as this may also interfere with the technician's use of the probe during the procedure.
Disclosure
As with all types of radiologic imaging, some limitations may result in an invalid report. Such factors include but are not limited to body habitus, anatomical variants, and the inability to maintain procedure posture.
